Property tax exclusion rising to the first $125,000 of value (effective July 1, 2026)
Military retirement is state-tax-free under the Bailey decision

Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exclusion
Effective July 1, 2026, North Carolina's homestead exclusion rises to the first $125,000 of appraised value (up from $45,000) for honorably discharged veterans with a 100% permanent and total service-connected disability, or those receiving specially adapted housing benefits, and for eligible surviving spouses. It increases further in 2027. File Form NCDVA-9 with your county assessor; see the NC DMVA property tax page.
Tax-Free Military Retirement
North Carolina does not tax military retirement pay. Under the Bailey decision, eligible military retirement income has been exempt from state income tax since 2021, and VA disability compensation is never taxed.

This program provides up to eight semesters of tuition and fees for children (under 25) of qualifying disabled, deceased, combat, or POW/MIA North Carolina veterans. The state restored it with $11 million in funding for 2026-27. Apply through the NC Scholarship portal.
Employment
NC4ME and NCWorks give veterans priority job access (postings open to veterans 24 hours early), plus MOS licensing credit and free CyberVets training. See the NC DMVA employment page.
Installations & Health Care
North Carolina hosts Fort Liberty, Camp Lejeune, MCAS Cherry Point, and Seymour Johnson AFB. Four VA medical centers, Durham, Fayetteville Coastal, Salisbury, and Asheville, plus four state veterans homes serve veterans statewide. Find facilities with the VA NC locator.
