Michigan is home to roughly 435,500 veterans, and most of them are leaving money on the table. A full property tax exemption that now renews automatically, military retirement that was never taxed here in the first place, and tuition grants for veterans' kids. Here's the 2026 guide to claiming every Michigan state benefit you qualify for, written by veterans, not lawyers.
Operation Pathfinder is 100% free. No fees. No commission cuts. We don't sell your information. Built and funded by veterans, for veterans, because guidance shouldn't cost you what you've already earned. If this guide helps you, share it with another vet who needs it.

Property Tax Exemption for Michigan Veterans
The Disabled Veterans Property Tax Exemption under MCL 211.7b is Michigan's single most valuable state benefit. It fully exempts a qualifying veteran's homestead from property tax collection.
Who Qualifies
You qualify if you are a Michigan resident, discharged under honorable conditions, and meet one of three tests: rated by the VA as permanently and totally disabled at the 100% rate, rated individually unemployable (IU), or holding a VA certificate for specially adapted housing. Un-remarried surviving spouses keep the exemption, and under Public Acts 150-152 of 2023 it now applies to any homestead the spouse owns and occupies, including one purchased after the veteran's death.
How Much You Save
The entire property tax bill on your primary residence. On a typical Michigan home, that's thousands of dollars every year, for life.
How to Apply
File Treasury Form 5107 with your local assessor (no longer the board of review) along with your VA rating letter. The best part of the 2023 reform: starting with the 2025 tax year, an approved exemption renews automatically. No more re-filing every year. Full details at Michigan Treasury's exemption page.
Michigan Income Tax: Retirement Pay Was Never Taxed
Two separate wins here, and veterans often confuse them:
Military retirement pay is 100% exempt from Michigan income tax, full stop. This has long been the rule and is unaffected by other pension changes. (Michigan Treasury)
The general pension tax phase-out completes in 2026. Under Public Act 4 of 2023, all retirees can now deduct other retirement income up to $67,610 single / $135,220 joint for tax year 2026. That matters if you have a second civilian pension. (RAB 2026-1)
Active duty pay earned by Michigan residents is also exempt, and VA disability compensation is never taxed at any level (IRS).
