  • Free claims help from IDVA service officers and county Veterans Assistance Commissions

Property Tax Exemptions

The Standard Homestead Exemption for Veterans with Disabilities (SHEVD) exempts the first $250,000 of equalized assessed value for veterans rated 70% or higher, which covers most Illinois homes entirely. Ratings of 50-69% get a $5,000 EAV reduction and 30-49% get $2,500. Veterans rated 100% permanently and totally disabled no longer reapply every year, and un-remarried surviving spouses keep the exemption and can transfer it to a new home. File Form PTAX-342 with your county assessment office. Returning from deployment? The Returning Veterans' Exemption adds a $5,000 EAV reduction for two years, claimable after every qualifying return.

No Tax on Retirement, Period

Illinois does not tax military retirement pay, Survivor Benefit Plan payments, or any retirement income that appears on your federal return. Active duty pay, including basic training and Guard/Reserve duty pay, is subtracted on Schedule M. VA disability compensation is never taxed at any level.

Education: The Illinois Veteran Grant

The IVG pays tuition and mandatory fees at every Illinois public college, undergraduate or graduate, for up to four academic years. You qualify with one year of active duty, an honorable discharge, and Illinois residency at entry into service. The detail most veterans miss: IVG is a state benefit that stacks on top of your federal GI Bill, so many Illinois vets use IVG for tuition and save their GI Bill months. The Illinois National Guard Grant and MIA/POW Scholarship add more paths for Guard members and families.

Employment

Illinois adds veterans preference points to passing scores for state jobs, runs the Illinois Joining Forces network of 200+ veteran-serving organizations, and certifies veteran-owned businesses for a 3% state procurement goal. New for 2026: veteran households get SNAP eligibility up to 200% of the poverty line, and state-employed veterans get 4 paid days per year for VA medical appointments.

Installations & Health Care

Illinois hosts Naval Station Great Lakes (the Navy's only boot camp), Scott Air Force Base (home of U.S. Transportation Command), and Rock Island Arsenal. VA care runs through Jesse Brown and Edward Hines Jr. in Chicagoland, the Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago, VA Illiana in Danville, and the Marion VA. The state runs five Veterans' Homes: Anna, Chicago, LaSalle, Manteno, and Quincy. Veterans Crisis Line: dial 988, then press 1.
