No State Income Tax

Tennessee has no state income tax on wages, retirement, or military retired pay. The old Hall tax on interest and dividends was fully repealed in 2021. Your military pension, VA disability, and everything else are 100% free of Tennessee income tax.

Property Tax Relief for Disabled Veterans

Veterans rated 100% permanent and total (service-connected), and those permanently disabled from a combat injury, get property tax relief on the first $175,000 of their home's market value, with no income limit. Unremarried surviving spouses qualify too. Apply through your County Trustee. (A 2026 bill to remove the $175,000 cap is moving through the legislature but is not yet law.)

Education: Helping Heroes Grant

The Helping Heroes Grant pays $1,000 per semester full-time, or $500 part-time, to honorably discharged veterans, Guard, and Reserve members who earned a qualifying campaign medal and don't yet have a bachelor's degree. Children under 23 and spouses of veterans who died from a service-connected injury, or who are POW/MIA, can also attend Tennessee public colleges tuition-free under the Dependents' Tuition Waiver.

Employment

Tennessee adds veterans' preference points to state job exams, and the TEAM Act guarantees a job interview to qualified veterans for open state positions. Submit your DD-214.
