South Carolina Veteran Benefits 2026: Property Tax, Retirement & Tuition

By the Operation Pathfinder Team

South Carolina quietly became one of the best states in the country to be a disabled veteran, and most veterans here don't know it. A 2024 change in the law now lets totally disabled veterans claim a full property tax exemption from the year they're rated, and even recover refunds for prior years they already paid. Stack that on tax-free military retirement and free college for your kids, and there's real money on the table. Here's every South Carolina benefit you can claim in 2026, who qualifies, and how to apply, free and with no catch.

Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exemption (Now Retroactive)

Veterans with a 100% permanent and total (P&T) service-connected rating, and eligible surviving spouses, pay no property tax on their primary residence, up to five acres, plus up to two vehicles. Under Act 116, signed by Governor McMaster in 2024, you can now claim the exemption starting the year your disability occurs and file retroactively to recover taxes you already paid, generally for the previous two years. If you were rated a year or two ago and kept paying, you may be owed a refund. Apply free through MyDORWAY, the SC Department of Revenue portal, with your VA rating letter.

Two 2026 bills, H.4700 and H.4600, would extend a partial, proportional exemption to veterans rated below 100% (your exemption percentage would match your disability rating). Both are still in committee as of June 2026.

Military Retirement Tax Exemption

Since tax year 2022, South Carolina exempts 100% of military retirement pay from state income tax, with no age requirement and no dollar cap (S.C. Code § 12-6-1171). Survivor Benefit Plan annuities are exempt too, and VA disability compensation is tax-free at every level.

Free Tuition for Children of Certain War Veterans

Children age 26 and under of veterans who are 100% disabled, deceased, POW/MIA, Medal of Honor, or Purple Heart recipients can attend South Carolina state-supported colleges and technical schools tuition-free. Both the parent and child must be South Carolina residents. Apply through the SC Department of Veterans' Affairs.
